Stone
Carving Studio 7, run by sculptor Andrew Arp, is in an old brick
building located in the historic Fort Ethan Allen in Winooski, VT.
The carving studio has both indoor and outdoor facilities. The classes/workshops
are designed as an introduction to marble and granite carving. You
will be introduced to both hand, electric and pneumatic tools. There
will be discussions and demonstrations, which will enable you to learn
the skills necessary to carry on and create your own body of work.
The workshops will allow up to ten (10) participants and will focus
on personalized instruction within this small group. Sessions begin
every Monday and continue through Friday from 9a.m. - 5p.m. |

CLASSES/WORKSHOPS:
The classes are designed to give you a working knowledge and understanding
of how to begin carving in marble and granite. The SCS7 approach
to carving is hands on, from day one you will be using the tools
necessary to carve. Class time will consist of a short lecture followed
by a demonstration and then it's your turn. The first class will
show you how to drill and split a larger stone to a workable size
and then you will move onto roughing out your shape with chisels,
hammers and small grinders. Throughout the week you will work with
pneumatic tools to learn shaping and texturing. At the end of the
week grinding and polishing techniques will be discussed.
Optional: You
may extend your learning experience by joining the next session, depending
upon availability, or continue with an independent study. |

ARTIST
STATEMENT:
I am an abstract carver working primarily with granite. Frequently
my inspiration begins with the human body. The sculptures themselves
are sensual forms, which allude to the movement and gestures of the
human torso. With each stone I strive to find the balance between
the concept and the material. My training has been in large-scale
public monuments. This has enabled me to work within groups and learn
how to communicate with others. This training has been invaluable
to my teaching. SCS7 is my way of passing on my knowledge and sharing
the experience of making stone sculpture. |
